Do you think you have achieved a research result?
Contact the Technology Transfer Unit, keeping your Center Director and your Unit Manager informed.
The Technology Transfer Unit supports researchers in analyzing the market potential of technologies, identifying and activating intellectual property protection tools, and evaluating the technology development path.
Do you want to protect and valorize a research result?
The most commonly used methods for protecting research results are patents, copyright, and trade secrets. With the support of Technology Transfer and external experts, you will be able to determine which tools to use, based on the technology to be protected and the valorization plan. Among these, patents are of particular interest, as they guarantee exclusive rights over the invention and encourage innovative activity. Since this is a complex, costly tool that is not always applicable, the Foundation has established a structured protection process.
Pay particular attention not to disclose sensitive information, and begin evaluating the costs, benefits, and available alternatives with the Technology Transfer Unit and your managers.
The valorization process aims to generate economic and social impact, as well as self-financing for research, and can be undertaken regardless of the protection method chosen. Valorization activities follow a path that is often non-linear, iterative, and long-term, which can lead to co-development agreements with companies, spin-offs, transfer of ownership of the results, or the granting of licenses.
Below you will find a summary of the process, described in more detail in the relevant procedures.
Are you thinking about launching a spin-off?
Launching a spin-off means establishing a company whose exclusive or main purpose is the valorization of research results and the related Intellectual Property Rights, in which FBK may also hold an equity stake.
Start talking about it with the Technology Transfer Unit right away, and consider participating in the Proof of Concept Program, which will provide you with skills and funding to launch an entrepreneurial venture!
Starting from an idea, after passing through two evaluation steps, the spin-off begins to take shape with approval from the Board of Directors. Throughout this journey, you will always be accompanied and supported both by internal structures and by the local innovation ecosystem, maintaining a strong connection with the Foundation throughout the company's entire life cycle.
Below you will find a summary of the process, described in more detail in the relevant procedures.
