FBK offers two options for the Research computing.

Physical machines

Depending on the purpose, the calculation resources must be agreed with the IT Service ([email protected]).
The two modes include machines:

  • managed: located in the Data Center and centrally managed by FBK, they are connected to the DMZ and host Web servers.
  • self-managed: they are located in the data center, managed by users as administrators, accessible from the internal network, they surf the internet but cannot provide external services.

Virtual machines
The virtual machines are on the Azure cloud platforma. For self-managed virtual machines you need to to request a subscription on Azure to the IT Service ([email protected]). The costs of services on Azure will be borne by the Unit.

Computing resources must be agreed with the IT service ([email protected]).

Compulsory training

For those responsible for the autonomous management of tools and services provided by FBK a preparatory and periodic compulsory training is prescribed, with final examination and subsequent enabling by the direct Manager of the applicant and the System Administrator FBK (Head of the Digital Solutions and IT Infrastructure Service).

The new Courses proposed for year 23-24 and available on FBK Academy are: "Secure self-management of PCs" and "Secure Self-Management of Servers". If to become a System Administrator of a PC or a Server the frequency of the specific Course is mandatory, to manage one or more PCs and one or more Servers it is mandatory to join both.

For more information please see the Guidelines for the proper management of PCs and self-managed servers.
