        WIFI NETWORK UPDATE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>

        During the month of January we will be updating the Wifi network management software to comply with the latest security standards.<\/p>

        The updates will be carried out outside working hours and will be mostly invisible to users.

        High-performance computing systems housing at Trentino Digitale 2024<\/h3>\n \n \n \n <\/svg>\n <\/div>\n

        In May 2009, the construction works for\u00a0 the FBK Data Center were underway.
        A pioneering structure for that times, with 14 rack cabinets (indicated below only
        as \"racks\") each comprising 16 servers, distributed on an area of 65 square meters
        (power equivalent, in the same space, to that of 450 personal computers) with the capacity of the air conditioning systems to dispose of 52 Kw (with two units in redundancy) and ensure a maximum internal temperature of 24\u00b0C...<\/p>

        Today, 15 years later, the technology has undergone radical changes and the load
        of information and energy to sustain has grown exponentially. For example, for the same rack size, the energy consumption is much higher...<\/p>

        In fact, the advent of AI has generated additional questions and management problems, as machines based on GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) consume 10 times more (a single 4U computing server can now consume up to 10 kW) and the number of such computing servers had remarkably increased in the meantime: in total almost 13 full racks on 14...<\/p>

        The possible solutions proposed during discussion meetings were as follows:<\/p>

        In recent years, the world of IT infrastructure has changed dramatically, both in terms of complexity and sphere of influence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

        If the systems dedicated to users were previously concentrated only in data centers, the use of smart working and consequently tools for collaborative work and transversal applications for research, have changed their priorities and delivery methods, gradually migrating to the cloud. <\/span>Thus, if the operation of the Foundation\u2019s buildings and laboratories depends entirely on the presence of infrastructure services which, by nature, must remain on-site, the new working context has made necessary measures to make accessible to users the use of many services from the outside<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

        This distribution of systems in different sites - on-site and public clouds - exponentially increases the risks related to the availability and privacy of data, as well as the protection of the same systems. <\/span>This awareness, matured by the IT Infrastructure Service and the Cybersecurity Centre, has therefore resulted in the development of a project that aims to improve and rethink the security measures<\/strong> already in use, following the latest technology to mitigate and minimise economic, functional, reputational, regulatory and legal risks for the Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

        The Service pursues as its primary objective the definition of progress according to a thought of proactive research and oriented to cybersecurity<\/strong>, always updated and designed on the needs of the users who will benefit from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

        This cornerstone is precisely supported by the pivotal paradigm: allowing users to work safely, easily, from anywhere, anytime, with any device, with the same modalities.<\/em><\/span><\/p>

        IT Service Reorganization 2023-24<\/h3>\n \n \n \n <\/svg>\n <\/div>\n

        The next generational renewal will see in the years 2026-2027 the release of four components from the IT Infrastructure Service team, including the current Head of Service, the Operational Managers of the IT Infrastructure Unit and the IT Support Unit, and one of its components.<\/p>

        For this reason the Service has chosen to work in advance on a Plan of succession and reorganization. The aim is to ensure a level of efficiency that meets the needs of users and to train the components that will remain or take over, ensuring continuity<\/a> in the tasks of competence.<\/p>

        WiFi network extension 2023-24<\/h3>\n \n \n \n <\/svg>\n <\/div>\n

        The FBK WiFi network was originally set up with the technologies available in 2017. The IT Infrastructure Service, to meet the new needs that emerged in the past six years, has therefore considered necessary to update, define and implement it in collaboration with the Heritage Service for the physical infrastructure part.<\/p>

        Milestones of the project definition were: the improvement of WiFi coverage in the various offices and, at the same time, the increase in connection speed and security in the use of data. At the same time the Service, in line with its pivotal paradigm \"work safely, easily, from anywhere, anytime, with any device, with the same modalitites\"<\/em> has developed a system configuration to facilitate the greatest possible flexibility in the autonomous use of space and workstations (hot desking, according to which the operating base is no longer closely linked to a specific location)facilitating mobility between buildings while reducing dependence on cables and physical archives.<\/p>
